It turns out you can,

jackoryan once managed to get himself muted for 1 day for racism
Not only that he later managed to get himself banned for 1 day for mute evading

While he was muted we both tested a lots of things (my goal was to check if someone can bypass the mute and thus report the bugs accordingly)
Few of the things we found out were,

1. Party chat is disabled during mute (although there might be a bug still where if the staff mutes the player from creative the party chat isnt muted)
2. Clan chat is disabled too (I invited the guy to my clan and tested it)
3. fmsg works during a mute

Finally jack went to SkyBlockDream and used signs to evade mute

Now that we are on this topic, its also possible to self ban/self mute/self warn (staff punishing themselves)

Now this may seem like to a great way to farm reports but its not
Punishment durations increase as your number of offences increases (which inevitably results in a perm ban)
Whenever you see a bug regarding that always report it on forums

Being said all that you are not allowed to break rule as punishment is real wether you self report it or not
