Claims not being recognized

Ok so I started making a base underground around y 0 and some negatives, first when I made the claim and put down some chests it said "These chests will be not protected since they are underground", weird but not a huge problem since I can just put Private signs on them but when it came to unclaiming/trusting a friend it wouldn't let me saying "Stand in the claim you want to use" when I was INSIDE the claim borders according to the claim stick and the /claimslists but wouldn't let me run the commands. Is this some problem for deep underground claims or what?
