Zpigman spawn rate (need help)

I got 2 zombie pigman spawners from a spawner crate, now i have placed them (and merged).
Here are my questions,

2 spawners currently spawn only like 3/4 zombie pigmans every 2 or 3 minutes, sometimes it takes even longer. is this normal?
Is there a way to improve the spawn rate?
also i wonder, is it worth merging them? or should i place them appart from eachother?

Please i need answers as those spawners costed me real money and i want it to work optimal.
