You can never be 100% safe. The only thing you can actually do is try to report them on the forums, when they’ve scammed you. Gather proof in the form of screenshots. This only applies however if the trade started on a server where scamming is bannable. You will not be able to retreive the items you’ve lost during the scam by reporting them tho. So I wouldn’t recommend trading cross servers unless you completely trust someone.

There are a lot of scammers around, so you should like zethfull said only trade with ppl u trust, like staff or friends

You can always contact a staff for further observation regarding the trade process, in case you were uncomfortable with the way the trade would be handled.
