Reposting a comment from the Suggestions page, as this helpful trick doesn't seem to be known very well.

Do you want to rename an item, but aren't sure of how the item will look? Would you like to test out colorcode combinations without having to spend rename tags?
Good News! There is an "Item Rename Simulator" in Prison. However, to use it you still need to know what the codes are. A simple google search can help (unsure if we can post links to other websites in forums, will edit in a link if I find out we can).

In Prison there are two ways to "simualte" item renames, Gang chat or Cell chat.
Cell Chat:
1) Create or join a cell.
2) Go to your cell.
3) Type "/c c" (without "") until you get to Cell Chat.
4) Type what you want to rename your item to (Cell Chat allows you to use colorcodes to talk). Example: &9&lBest&7&lGreetings
5) Once you find a combination you like, right click the item rename.
6) Hold the item you want to rename.
7) Press "t" to enable chat, and press the up arrow to select the message that you preferred. Press Enter.
Congratulations, you've renamed the item successfully!
* To leave Cell Chat, type "/c c" (without "") until you get to Public Chat. Alternatively, type "/spawn" (without "") and send a chat message. This will reset your chat to Public (and send the message).
Gang Chat:
1) Create or join a gang.
2) Type "/g c" (without "") until you get to Gang Chat.
3) Type what you want to rename your item to (Gang Chat allows you to use colorcodes to talk). Example: &9&lBest&7&lGreetings
4) Once you find a combination you like, right click the item rename.
5) Hold the item you want to rename.
6) Press "t" to enable chat, and press the up arrow to select the message that you preferred. Press Enter.
Congratulations, you've renamed the item successfully!
* To leave Gang Chat, type "/g c" (without "") until you get to Public Chat.
* Alternatively, you can directly select between Gang Chat modes (Public, Gang, Truce, and Ally) by using "/g c [p, g, t, or a]" (without ""), respectively. Cell Chat does not support this.
