How to grow custom crops

I'm new to sbd and want to make money. I found that custom crops earn you a lot of it but when I try to grow oranges on dirt they just disappear. Can someone pls explain how to grow em?PLS. also, i heard that cactus farms are better i don't understand cuz they give 4 but lollipops give 160

Do a Farming Set up make a 9x9 Dirt/Farmland
Break the middle block
Place water in the middle
Place the seeds
DO NOT CLICK THE PLACED SEEDS IT WILL DISAPPEAR

Cactus is better because it can be automatically farm.
